PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission convened for a hearing Tuesday evening regarding electric rates.

Rhode Island Energy's proposed electric rates for this winter include a net monthly increase of roughly 16% — or $22 each month for the average customer.

Dozens of residents attended the hearing to speak out against the proposed rate hike.

"I see everyone here as a human being, and I really hope that you can see us as human beings too," Lee Wilder told the commission.

Melissa Bubble echoed that sentiment.

"The rate increase will drastically affect us, and I may have to choose whether I put food on the table or pay the utility bill," she said.

If approved, the electric rate changes would go into effect this fall.
