PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Voters are not getting what they bargained for with Proposition 312 .
Last year, voters overwhelmingly passed the measure aimed at forcing cities and towns to enforce laws against homeless camps and loitering.
Under the new law, local governments must reimburse property owners for damages they can prove were caused by people experiencing homelessness. State records show that none of the property owners who applied for money have gotten any yet.
Since the start of the year, more than two dozen property owners have submitted claims with the Arizona Department of Revenue seeking a total of about $128,000 in damages.
The claims asked for as little as $265 to as much as $41,000 for “security patrols.” A handful of the requests were rejected outright, while most w
