WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The Nepali community in Connecticut gathered in solidarity with local leaders Tuesday night, honoring the lives lost during recent protests in Nepal.
A candlelight vigil was held outside West Hartford Town Hall to pay tribute to the 19 people killed Monday after police opened fire on demonstrators. The protests, mainly led by teenagers and young adults, broke out after Nepal’s government blocked several social media platforms, a move many say was aimed at silencing their voices.
“This isn’t just about the fight against the social media ban,” said Shub Dhakal, of Wethersfield, who attended the vigil with his family. “The primary cause is corruption. Our hearts go to them. We can’t do much being here, but we can be a voice and share in their sorrow.”
