Maria Pereira moved one step closer Tuesday to keep her seat on the city council, even as she faces charges related to absentee ballot fraud in the 2023 municipal election.

Pereira won the Democratic endorsement for the 138th District, joining fellow challenger Keyla Medina defeating party-endorsed candidates Samia Suliman, also an incumbent, and Kevin Monks.

Pereira did not offer comment as she greeted voters outside Thomas Hooker School Tuesday evening, but Medina defended her running mate.

Medina said she felt many council members ignored pleas from residents. She declined to identify specific councilors, but she considered Pereira someone who wanted to help.
