A Blade article entitled “More U.S. cities face military presence” (Sept. 3) notes that President Trump recently claimed that Chicago is “the worst and most dangerous city in the world by far.”
Let’s see. Chicago’s murder rate is 21 per 100,000 people. According to CDC numbers, Memphis’ murder rate is almost double that: 40.9 per 100,000. And there are multiple cities in Mexico with murder rates well above 100 per 100,000 citizens.
What about violent crime in general? Chicago’s violent crime rate is 540 per 100,000, while Memphis’ violent crime rate is a staggering 2,501 per 100,00, almost five times worse than Chicago’s.
So Chicago is clearly not the “most dangerous city” in the United States, let alone “the world by far.” One wishes that the leader of the free world had a better comma
