No results had been posted as of 9 p.m. in a special election with far-reaching consequences for the small town of Palmer Lake north of Colorado Springs.

The lights were still on in the town's administration buildings as election judges worked to process ballots late into the evening. Tuesday was the mail-in ballot deadline for the special election, which was prompted by successful petitions.

Each of the questions on the special election ballot was tied to the months-long controversy over an annexation request to create a 74,000 square-foot Buc-ee's travel center east of the town. The campaign sought to recall trustees Shana Ball and Kevin Dreher, both of whom have voted to forward the proposal through to the final stage of review set for October.
