Things have been quiet for years on Balmer Road in rural Niagara County.

People say they moved here for the peaceful surroundings, affordable housing, ability to own a few acres of land and close proximity to a good school district for their kids.

”It’s quiet. It’s safe. There are kids who ride their bikes out here,” said Jimmy Alfiere, director of sales and marketing at Autumn’s Gate, a horseback riding camp on Balmer Road that hosts hundreds of kids every summer.

”That would all change when there are big trucks going down the road,” he added.

CWM Chemical Services is proposing to do just that: It wants to send countless trucks carrying hazardous waste to a new landfill that would be open for anywhere from one to three decades.
