City councillors have revealed the timescale of flood alleviation schemes for Plymouth, after the second wettest August day on record brought chaos.
The weather station at Mount Batten recorded 56mm of rain in three hours overnight on August 28/29, putting huge pressure on the drainage and sewerage system.
The average rainfall for August is 80.3mm but there was more than 50 per cent expected rainfall in just 60 minutes and 70 per cent in four hours.
Over a 72 hour period, the council received 311 reports of floods and blocked drains including 115 reports of directly flooded properties.
Council staff attended 61 emergency out of hour call outs over that time and worked to reinstate blown manhole covers and fallen trees
