Polish NATO fighter jets were scrambled.

Poland has shot down Russian suicide drones in a dramatic escalation after the lethal devices "repeatedly violated" its airspace during a savage attack on Ukraine.

The NATO member was forced to activate its air defences in the early hours of Wednesday to destroy the aircraft in what is believed to be its first direct military clash with Russian forces since the Ukraine war began.

Terrified residents have been urgently advised to stay inside as Polish Armed forces "identified and neutralise the objects" in a tense military operation.

The development follows after experts cautioned about Putin's schemes to capture territory in two EU nations.
