A driver is still traumatised after her 4WD almost rolled in a crash with a group of horses that had strayed onto a busy rural road in South Australia .

Two vehicles hit five horses on Gawler Rd at Two Wells in Adelaide’s north about 7pm on Monday, after a gate was accidentally left open on a nearby property on Germantown Rd.

Four horses died before anyone could try to save them, and a fifth was euthanised on the roadside due to the extent of its injuries.

The driver’s husband told 7NEWS.com.au his wife is “lucky to be alive” and it was a miracle no one else was seriously injured or killed.

Gawler Rd is a busy rural route east of Two Wells, frequently used by commuters heading from the city towards Gawler. It is unlit, with just a single lane in each in direction and a 100km/h speed
