Mayoral candidate Ron Trujillo had a unique instruction for the upcoming Santa Fe municipal election.

“Treat this election like it’s the sugar tax,” Trujillo said to laughs, referring to a controversial 2017 proposal to tax sugary beverages that Santa Fe voters shot down by a wide margin. “Because we all came out for the sugar tax.”

Trujillo delivered his message during a packed mayoral candidate forum Tuesday night at The Food Depot’s cavernous warehouse on Siler Road. Hosted by the League of Women Voters of Santa Fe County, he and seven other mayoral hopefuls shared their thoughts on affordability, development, crime, annexation and other issues to more than 200 attendees amid towering shelves of nonperishable goods.
