Calexico PD reports rise in Hyundai and Kia thefts

CALEXICO — The Calexico Police Department is investigating a recent spike in vehicle thefts and recoveries, many involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles—particularly Sonatas and Elantras across various model years. This trend reflects similar patterns seen statewide and across the country, where certain Hyundai and Kia models are being targeted due to the absence of advanced anti-theft technology.

A major factor behind these thefts has been the spread of “how-to” videos on social media platforms that demonstrate methods for stealing these vehicles. These videos—often shared as part of online “challenges”—have fueled a rise in thefts nationwide. Unfortunately, our community is experiencing the same issue.
