HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) - Although we are still a long time away from any state borders changing, Indiana is starting to put together the pieces that could make a split happen.

The conversation over Illinois counties joining Indiana began back in 2020. That year, several counties passed non-binding referendums to split from the rest of Illinois. Now, 33 counties have passed several referendums.

This past year, Illinois and Indiana's legislatures introduced bills to form a commission to discuss the split. The bill in Illinois never got off the ground, but in Indiana, a state boundary commission has been formed and will meet soon.

Their goal is to figure out how to get at least a few Illinois counties to join the Hoosier state.
