NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A Nashville couple is safe, but their home suffered considerable damage in a fire early Wednesday morning.

The Nashville Fire Department responded to Kine Avenue in the Berry Hill neighborhood for a house fire around 1:40 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find the backyard deck in flames.

They attacked the fire before it spread any further to the main house. Despite their efforts, the house sustained significant damage.

The couple who live there managed to escape safely.

Nashville Fire reported that smoke woke the husband up, and he successfully woke up his wife, and the two went outside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
