CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A deadly crash on I-77 in Charlotte closed the interstate for hours overnight.

The wreck happened just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9 on the southbound side to West Boulevard.

The crash appeared to have involved at least two SUVs, one of which came to a stop on its side. Both were heavily damaged.

Medic confirmed that one person died and said another was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officials have not yet publicly released the name of the person who died, nor have they said if anyone could face charges.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. North Carolina State Highway Patrol was leading the investigation.

All lanes of I-77 reopened early Wednesday morning.
