China has begun ramping up imports of blacklisted Russian natural gas, deepening energy ties with Moscow in open defiance of United States sanctions.
This will test the resolve of President Donald Trump , who has recently expressed frustration with Vladimir Putin 's failure to meet his deadlines for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
On Tuesday, the Zarya , a sanctioned Russian tanker, docked at the LNG terminal in Beihai, a coastal city in southern China, publicly available ship-tracking data viewed by Newsweek showed, apparently delivering its third cargo from the Arctic LNG 2 project in northern Siberia.
Newsweek reached out to the White House and the Chinese and Russian foreign ministries via e-mailed requests for comment.
