Nearly 1500 people joined in on a day of fun at The Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens for a Back to School Festival sponsored by a dozen community partners including Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz and TD Bank on Saturday September 6. Nearly 700 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed and kids had the ‘run of the place,’ playing Jenga, hanging in the bounce house, slide and dozens even sat for a turn in the dunk tank. Free ice cream and refreshments were on hand courtesy of Hydro Quebec. “We do this for the kids,” said Club CEO Costa Constantinides. “We’re ready for the new school year.” The club serves 4,000 children a year at five sites including their rooftop 1-acre farm on top of the Standard Motors Building on Steinway Street.
