Last year, a lack of depth derailed Pitt’s season when injuries piled up. The offseason focus was on building security across the roster, making sure the Panthers weren’t one injury away from unraveling. Two weeks into the 2025 campaign, that work is already paying off.

No side of the field embodies that better than the defense — specifically the cornerbacks, as well as some standout performances at defensive end and linebacker.

Shawn Lee Jr. became the first true freshman to take the field this season when he checked in during the third quarter against Duquesne. It wasn’t mop-up duty. Even in limited action, Lee showed flashes that made an impression on his head coach.
