SALT LAKE CITY — Surprise visits to Utah businesses are becoming more common, especially businesses in industries like like construction and hospitality.

According to immigration attorney Joshua Irvine, these types of visits are not new. But they are becoming more common, and for some business owners they are coming out of the blue.

Irvine said these visits often start with a very tense moment.

“The typical way that it happens is there’s usually a 72-hour site inspection notice that is usually hand-delivered by an armed officer from DHS or from ICE,” Irvine said. “They say ‘hey, we’re going to be on site to pick up documents in three days, and here’s the list of documents we need.’”
