The Jefferson Apartments in Squirrel Hill continue to smolder more than 24 hours after a massive fire.
Pittsburgh's Action News 4 spoke with Mayor Ed Gainey, who praised the efforts of first responders. Advertisement
"Our firefighters are the best in the country in my eyes. And, you know, not just for what they do in situations like this, but I think yesterday spoke volumes of their commitment," Gainey said.
The fire started on the third floor and spread throughout the building , requiring 73 firefighters to work for hours to bring it under control. Firefighters also had to handle an electrical fire in the basement.
The 30 people evacuated from the building are safe, but lost everything in the process. The Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Magee Recreation Cent
