OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney called for heightened global pressure on Russia following a recent violation of NATO airspace by Russian drones. The incident occurred overnight, with Poland reporting that multiple drones entered its territory and were subsequently shot down with assistance from NATO allies.

Carney emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among NATO members and stated that Canada is working closely with Poland in response to the situation. He noted that this incident has prompted a formal consultation with NATO. On social media, Carney asserted, "We must increase the pressure" on Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and to pursue a lasting peace.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand expressed Canada's solidarity with both Poland and Ukraine, labeling the drone incursion as "another horrendous example of Putin's refusal to seek peace." The Polish military characterized the event as an "act of aggression."

In contrast, Moscow has denied any intent to target Poland. Belarus, a close ally of Russia, suggested that some drones may have "lost their course" due to network jamming.

The situation underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and the international community's response to Russia's military actions.
