Colorado with its famed "fourteeners" makes for one of the best mountain climbing and hiking locations in the nation. Each of Colorado's fourteeners requires different technical skills to be able to hike or climb. The difficulty ranges from the easier class one day hikes to class four climbs that require more than one day to scale. A common hazard arises when the terrain transitions from an easy hike to exposed scrambling, catching ill-prepared hikers off guard.

Depending on the criteria used, Colorado is said to have 53 to 58 fourteeners, or peaks that rise at least 14,000 feet in elevation.
