HOUSTON — Texas leaders took to social media to express their condolences after Charlie Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was assassinated at an event at a Utah college on Wednesday.

Kirk was rushed to a nearby hospital after he was shot, but later died. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.

College officials said at least one shot was fired and a suspect was in custody. CBS News later reported that the person had been released. FBI Director Kash Patel later announced that a second person was detained in connection with the shooting, but that person was also released.
