A male student who shot two of his peers at a Colorado high school died of self-inflicted injuries hours after the violence on Sept. 10, authorities said.
Jacki Kelley, spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, said the suspect was one of three students hospitalized with gunshot wounds after the shooting at Evergreen High School, located about 30 miles southwest of Denver. The shooter fired with a handgun inside and outside the school, Kelley said.
At around 12:24 p.m. local time on Sept. 10, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office received its first call of a shooting on the grounds of the school, according to Kelley. Hundreds of police responded to the shooting, which included a student allegedly wielding a handgun, Kelley said in a news briefing.
Kelley said it didn't appear officers fired any rounds. The high school, which serves more than 900 students, was declared safe by law enforcement after a brief lockdown, she said.
"There is no active threat to the community or to our students anymore," she told reporters.
Dr. Brian Blackwood, head of trauma at CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, said one of the wounded had critical injuries and the other had non-life-threatening injuries. They, along with the suspected shooter, were transported to St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood, the sheriff’s office said
Kelley said the sheriff's office is still investigating the shooting, which may have taken place just outside of the school on its property. Officials are investigating the suspected shooter's motive.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives' Denver field division office said on social media that it was involved in the investigation.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said he was closely monitoring the situation. State troopers were supporting local law enforcement.
“Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation,” Polis said in an X post. “We are all praying for the victims and the entire community.”
Parent-student reunification was taking place at Bergen Meadow Elementary School, about 6 miles away.
Evergreen High School is located about 20 miles from Columbine High School, the site of an infamous 1999 mass shooting that killed 12 students and a teacher. Columbine's shooting is considered one of the deadliest school shootings in American history.
