On September 2, 2024, professional endurance athlete Michelino Sunseri decided to cut a switchback during the fastest known time (FKT) attempt at a Grand Teton trail at Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park. Using the shortcut, he broke the speed record for ascending and descending the 13,775-foot peak, but the record was shortly revoked after his GPS track showed he cut a switchback while descending.
Facing prison time and the possibility of a fine of up to $5,000 for the shortcut, the athlete found some support in the National Park Service, calling it "overcriminalization," after it decided to retract its support for the prosecutors.
However, one year after his controversial run, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, federal Magistrate Judge Stephanie A. Hambrick ruled that Sunseri was guil
