DOVER – New class bells are ringing in New York City as Delaware State University expands its successful Delaware-based college prep high school concept to a new opportunity for under-resourced students in the Big Apple.

In partnership with New York City Public Schools, DSU opened the first HBCU Early College Prep High School last week for 125 students after receiving 1,100 applicants, Dr. Kareem McLemore, DSU vice president for strategic enrollment management and international affairs.

“That’s the exciting part — the interest is there,” McLemore told the Delaware Business Times. “The tough part is knowing a thousand other students wanted this same opportunity and couldn’t get in this year because of space.”
