A cruise ship passenger allegedly jumped overboard to avoid paying a hefty gambling debt.

Jey Gonzalez-Diaz was on the Rhapsody of the Seas when he attempted to avoid paying more than $16,000 US to the cruise line by jumping off the ship, CBS News reported.

The boat had departed the Port of San Juan in Puerto Rico on Aug. 31 and travelled to Barbados before returning to the original port on Sept. 7.

Gonzalez-Diaz jumped off the ship while guests were disembarking around 9:15 a.m. local time, during U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspection, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the outlet.

His escape failed, when people on jet skis approached him.
