PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The dreaded emerald ash borer has made its way into Portland, and it poses a threat to every ash tree in the city.
The invasive beetle from East Asia has already had a devastating impact on trees in North America, and was recently reported in Washington, Yamhill, Marion, and Clackamas counties.
Now it’s in Multnomah County, and the Oregon Department of Forestry says 100,000 trees are at risk.
The emerald ash borer has few predators, making it difficult to eradicate. Infested trees usually don’t live longer than 3 or 4 years before they turn brittle and die.
Portland Parks and Recreation‘s Urban Forestry division recently released a plan to manage the insects, which involves working with the public to monitor the rate of spread.
Here’s how you can help.
