MAINE, USA — A group of Republican state lawmakers wants the Trump administration to pull the plug on offshore wind projects in the Gulf of Maine.
State Representative Tiffany Strout, R-Harrington, joined dozens of her fellow Republicans in sending a letter to federal officials asking them to terminate four offshore wind leases totaling more than 400,000 acres.
Strout said the leases were sold at $50 per acre and far less than what they're worth.
"I just don't believe it's a good fit for the Gulf in Maine," Strout told NEWS CENTER Maine. "What is that doing to our marine life? What is that doing to our long-term goals of sustainability and to our seafood industry?"
The letter, written by state Rep. Regan Paul, R-Winterport, stressed that the projects pose a risk to Maine's $3.2 billion
