COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - We’ve reached the peak of hurricane season (September 10) and all is pretty quiet. We have one system we are watching coming off the coast of Africa. This wave has a low chance of development as we move into the next 7 days.

Why is it so quiet? Winds aloft have been a bit higher lately, which inhibits tropical growth.

We’ve also seen some Saharan dust that’s been kicked over the Atlantic and it also inhibits development.

Sea surface temperatures are rather warm with temps near or above the needed 80 degrees for development. So that is the one factor that would mean higher development, but the upper level winds and dust have been the biggest factor in why we haven’t had much development lately.
