Niagara Falls is recruiting for 12 volunteer firefighters to serve in the city’s rural contingent.

“It’s a good number to manage in terms of training,” said fire Chief Jo Zambito.

Niagara Falls Fire Department has just less than 80 volunteer firefighters working from volunteer stations 4, 5 and 6. The department also has more than 150 full-time firefighters.

“Our volunteers are extremely important. Out in the rural area, they come with vast experience because they know the area well — they live in the community, they live in the area that they’re serving,” said Zambito.

“That’s a requirement that you need to live within the volunteer catchment area. If there’s a significant event happening in the urban area in the city, we call the volunteers into the city, and they will run the calls
