NJ Transit is taking two actions that would deliver on Gov. Phil Murphy’s pledge to replace all of the state mass transit system’s oldest trains and buses by 2031.
The first was taken Tuesday to exercise an option to purchase another 200 multilevel III rail cars from manufacturer Alstom for $1.055 billion.
The other is an anticipated purchase of more new buses under a contract authorized in November 2024, which could be voted on by NJ Transit’s board of directors on Sept. 19, said NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri.
Both purchases would deliver on Murphy’s pledge made in February that the agency would take action this year to replace the aging equipment that is blamed for delays and cancellations.
