Missoula’s city leaders on Wednesday joined the county in officially opposing the Trump administration’s plan to shutter the Forest Service’s regional office in town. The city council also called on Montana’s congressional representatives to push back on the agency’s reorganization plans and workforce reductions.

On a nearly unanimous vote, the city council passed a resolution “calling for increased transparency” as the agency’s reorganization moves forward, noting that federal employment in Missoula County amounted to about 1,500 residents earning a combined $138 million in wages at the end of 2024, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
