OREM, UTAH (AZFamily/AP) — A person of interest is in custody, according to Utah authorities, after Charlie Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of the Arizona-based conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was assassinated on Wednesday during one of his trademark public appearances at a college in Utah. He was 31.
Authorities in Utah said they had a person of interest that was talking to them. FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, said the “subject of the horrific shooting” was in custody.
Investigators said the initial person who was taken into custody, was later arrested on obstruction charges.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox called the deadly shooting of Kirk a “political assassination” and it’s a “tragic day for our nation.”
