San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie on Tuesday announced a “Heart of the City” executive directive that, among other things, will aim to leverage more than $40 million in initial private-funding commitments for civic improvements.
Lurie, who unveiled the news in Union Square, said in a press release the funding secured by the nonprofit San Francisco Downtown Development Corporation would help to create safe, clean streets, support small business and activate downtown public spaces. San Francisco’s downtown has been relatively slow to recover since the COVID-19 pandemic, in large part because many employees continue to work remotely and tourism has yet to bounce back fully.
