MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On World Suicide Awareness Day, Wisconsin Democrats introduced legislation to create a self-exclusion list for purchasing a gun.
The bill comes after Jonathan Brostoff, a former member of the Wisconsin Assembly and a Milwaukee alder, died by suicide last November with a gun.
“He talked really openly about the struggles that he faced with depression,” Democratic State Sen. Kelda Roys said on Wednesday before introducing the bill. “I think [Brostoff] would have given anything to have had this law in place before he faced the last crisis that ended his life.”
The bill would enable Wisconsinites to report themselves to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, so that they would not be allowed to purchase a gun for up to a year, five years or 20 years.
