COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – The fatal shooting of conservative activist and influencer Charlie Kirk drew strong reaction from South Carolina leaders on Wednesday, with politicians on both sides of the aisle offering prayers and condemnation for the growing frequency of political violence.
Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot while speaking during a debate hosted by his organization at Utah Valley University. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died, according to President Donald Trump.
The shooter has not been found, despite earlier reports that a suspect had been taken into custody.
Within minutes of reports of the shooting, Gov. Henry McMaster (R) asked South Carolinians to “join Peggy and me in praying for [Kirk] and his family.”
