CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)— The shrimping industry in the Lowcountry could see big changes if a new amendment and ongoing lawsuit move forward. Local shrimpers say they’re losing money as imported seafood is sold under the label of “locally caught.”

Earlier this summer, the South Carolina Shrimpers Association filed a lawsuit against dozens of restaurants accused of misleading customers by selling imported shrimp while advertising it as local.

A study by SEA-D Consulting in June tested shrimp at 44 Charleston-area restaurants. According to the results, only four were actually serving local, wild-caught shrimp. The lawsuit claims the other 40 violated federal laws on false advertising and unfair trade practices, diverting profits from local shrimpers.
