TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Two candidates are competing to fill the open city council seat in Tampa. It’s vacant following the death of Councilwoman Gwendolyn Henderson.
Thomas Scott, who is a pastor of a church, hopes to return to a post he once held.
“This is short term. It’s only about 16 months. You need someone who has the experience to represent District 5,” Scott said.
The church leader served as a commissioner in Hillsborough County and a councilman in Tampa.
Scott's opponent is new to the political arena at 33 years old. Naya Young, who works for a nonprofit helping students in District 5, said she is ready to take on additional responsibilities. Young described herself for voters.
“Naya Young is community driven. She's people driven. I’ve worked in grassroots nonprofit for the pas
