PORT ARTHUR, Texas — An abandoned golf course that has sat unused for more than 15 years is being transformed into a new community green space in Pleasure Island.

The Palms Golf Course in Pleasure Island, which closed in 2008 after Hurricane Ike caused severe flooding and damage, is undergoing a makeover that will turn part of the property into a multi-use park.

Davon Chargois, assistant director of Lamar University’s Center for Advances in Water and Air Quality, said the project will convert 60 to 75 acres of the front nine holes into a two-and-a-half-mile trail system. “It’s better for the development, it’s better for your peace, your health, so let’s get outside,” Chargois said.
