Why did our governor, who was never in the military and cannot understand the hardships of deployment, send 400 West Virginians in the National Guard to Washington? Washington has its own Army Guard. Why us?

I am a veteran of the West Virginia Army Guard, Ohio Air Guard and the Air Force Reserve. I served more than 20 years as a citizen soldier and a chaplain. The Guard is here to support state disaster response and emergencies and, when necessary, deploy for federal needs. West Virginia has an incredible history of service, but it is apolitical.

The governor is trying to be the “mini-me” to the president. Would we accept the National Guard of another state patrolling our streets in Charleston? It is totally unnecessary that our state money is being spent for a political show in
