Embattled Australian National University vice chancellor Genevieve Bell has announced her resignation after a tumultuous period for the institution.

The university’s chancellor, Julie Bishop, announced the move in a short statement posted to the institution’s website on Thursday.

“On behalf of the ANU Council, I thank Distinguished Professor Bell for her service as Vice-Chancellor and President of our University,” she said.

In her own statement, Bell said: “this was not an easy decision”.

“As many of you know, the ANU has been a special place for me, ever since I was a child. And being its 13th vice chancellor has been an extraordinary privilege and also a heavy responsibility,” she said.
