WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Walla Walla Police warn people to be cautious of unsolicited communications from banks or security services after an individual fell victim to an elaborate fraud scheme.
According to a department press release, the incident began on August 27 when a pop-up message on the victim's laptop warned of a scam. The message included a phone number, which led the 76-year-old victim to a woman with an accent who instructed them on supposed security measures.
The victim also spoke with a man claiming to be from their bank, who convinced them to withdraw and transfer more than $45,000 to a "safe account." The scam involved different couriers picking up the cash from the victim's home.
A local bank manager's suspicions helped prevent an additional $35,000 withdrawal, prompting t
