Qualicum Beach town councillor Jean Young was issued a $650 administrative monetary penalty by Elections BC.
According to a notice posted online on Sept. 10, the reason for the penalty was "accepting a prohibited contribution" during the municipal election in October 2022.
In a letter sent to Young, Elections BC said that Young's disclosure statement reported $4,278.39 in campaign expenses, but did not report any contributions were made by Young.
Then during a phone call with the Electoral Finance team, Young confirmed she had self-funded her own campaign, at which point the Electoral Finance team informed Young that as an unendorsed candidate, she was only eligible to provide a contribution of $2,500 in a calendar year.
