SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - On Thursday, people will be gathering across the country to honor and remember the first responders and citizens who died in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Members of the Savannah Fire Department will gather Thursday at the fire station downtown to honor the 343 firefighters who paid the ultimate price saving countless others.
The annual ceremony will include several parts all with a special meaning.
A firefighter will ring the Big Duke Bell which stand as a memorial to the firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
The Savannah Fire chaplain will give an invocation, and Chief Elzie Kitchen will say a few words at the event.
A wreath honoring the fallen fighters will also be placed at the base of the department’s memorial.
