Gavin Chastain would have settled for the simple opportunity to take the field as a freshman, asked to take mental reps on the Bessemer City sideline behind senior starter Jameer Holmes.

“He was kind of an immature kid when he got here, feeling the need to be ‘the guy,’” said Bessemer City football coach Kyle Creed. “Obviously, at the time we had a guy, a heck of a guy. So he bought his time for a year, sat back, learned the playbook and after he kind of realized he was going to be behind (Holmes) for a year, he took the opportunity and has grown from it.”

Now, Chastain stands alone in Bessemer City football history books.
