MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- 24 years after the September 11 attacks, many people are still living with physical, psychological, and emotional wounds from that day that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people.

It's a story of horror and heroism intertwined in the fabric of American history.

Many people remember where they were and what they were doing that day when the first plane struck the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.

And Dr. Chris Mercado, a former New York Police Department officer, remembers it vividly. He joined the force in 1993 straight out of college.

Now, at age 54, he’s still within law enforcement and carries the memories and the stories of what happened on September 11 with him.
