The Queen City saw a “mind-boggling” 59.71% turnout in the Sept. 9 municipal and bond ballot — rocketing beyond expectations for a would-be sleepy ticket.

“It’s kind of massive to see that turnout,” political analyst and Montana State University professor Jessi Bennion said. “It’s bonkers.”

Helena’s Sept. 9 election put $283 million in bond issues from Helena Public Schools and a mayoral primary in front of Queen City voters — subjects that rarely see so much excitement, especially on an off year, Bennion said.

Off-year ballots, meaning years where there are no national or state elections drawing voters, usually see around 30-35% turnout, Elections Clerk Keven Johnson said.
