DES MOINES, Iowa —
Beth Shelton, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa, has helped create the new Exploremore cookie, a chocolate sandwich cookie inspired by rocky road ice cream.
Shelton said the release of a new cookie is always exciting and involves a lot of effort. A special committee helps nail down a flavor, a name, and taste tests, taking about two years.
"If you think about there being nine cookie flavors in the portfolio, we look at the data about what cookie flavor could improve the portfolio," Shelton said. "Lucky for us here in the Midwest, the rich chocolaty flavors are always the top sellers."
Girl Scout cookie sales begin in February, but the new Exploremore cookie can be sampled early on Oct. 9 at the Cookies on Tap fundraising event at the Iowa Taproom in Des Moines.
