The champion snowboarder, 39, and The Vampire Diaries actress, 36, have ended their engagement and split after five years together, PEOPLE can confirm exclusively.

A source close to the pair says "it was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another."

Representatives for White and Dobrev did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
